Frequently Asked Questions
Do you need to get fit before starting karate training? PDF Print E-mail
People often ask this question or make the statement  "I'm not fit enough", but remember, you train to get fit. You don't need to get fit to train. Every student regardless of age is encouraged to work at their own pace or as hard or easy as they want. Each class begins with a good warm up and stretch so that the body will be ready for the training that follows. Karate is one of the best ways to get fit because it works the whole body in a controlled safe environment.  It improves   flexibility, coordination, balance, muscle strength and muscle tone, not to mention fat loss. Improvements begin after only a few sessions.

What age can you be to start karate? PDF Print E-mail
In our Kids Karate® classes it is not unusual to start 5 year olds off and in some special cases, even 4 year of age is okay but generally not any younger than that.  At the other end of the age spectrum a person's wellbeing and desire is the only criteria. Of course people in their advanced years are going to find some technique harder or impossible to perform, but this really has no meaning when focusing on what training in the Golden Knights is really all about: enjoyment and personal benefit for all.

What are the injury risks when training in karate? PDF Print E-mail
While the occasional knock or bump does occur, serious injuries are rare. People are often surprised when they learn that non-contact karate is a very safe activity. In fact much safer than many of the more main stream sport such as football, soccer, netball, rugby and basketball. This is due in part to the instructors having a heightened awareness of their responsibility to ensure that their students are able to train in a very safe environment.

How long before I can use my Karate skills? PDF Print E-mail
From the point of view of self defence; a person is better equipped to defend themself after each lesson they attend.  Even after the first class the new student will know how to perform several punches and kicks correctly as well as how to block and evade an attacker. Each class that follows more and more skills are developed as will a student's confidence, which plays a big role in any self defence situation.

I have a bit of a knee problem ... can I still do karate? PDF Print E-mail
In principle anyone can get involved in a Golden Knights Martial Arts class regardless of any disability that a person may have. However, always consult your family doctor before commencing training just to be on the safe side. Usually minor physical problems don't interfere with your training and its just a matter of letting the instructor know so that they can keep an eye out for any special needs.
